Thanksgiving day is BUSY with all the food prep, travel, hosting, etc! Make this easy hassle-free breakfast ahead of time to enjoy a healthy-ish, delicious recipe with those you love! Brown butter apple pie baked oatmeal is the absolute perfect fall breakfast/ brunch recipe.

What if it’s not Thanksgiving season? Don’t worry you can make this anytime of the year! Apples are always easy to find at the grocery store.

How to Make Brown Butter Apple Pie Baked Oatmeal

Follow the instructions below to make the best brown butter apple pie baked oatmeal!

Make the Brown Butter
  • Add butter to a small saucepan on the stove and heat the butter on medium-low heat until it smells nutty and starts to turn brown. Set the butter aside to cool for about 15 minutes.
Make the Glazed Apples
  • Slice an apple into thin slices and add to a pan on the stove at medium heat. Add all the ingredients for glazed apples to the pan. Cook the apples until soft. Remove from heat and set aside about 10-1 5 minutes.
Prepare & Bake the Baked Oatmeal
  • During the last few minutes of the apple and brown butter cool time, preheat the oven to 350℉. Spray your 9×9 dish with baking spray.
  • In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients for the baked oatmeal together until they are incorporated. Pour the mixture into your greased baking dish.
Drizzle with Glaze
  • Layer apple slices on top of the baked oatmeal. Drizzle the oatmeal with any remaining glaze from the apples. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the center is set.
  • Let the baked oatmeal completely cool. When the oatmeal is at room temperature, whisk powdered sugar and milk together to make a glaze. Drizzle the glaze on top of the cooled baked oatmeal. If you are eating the baked oatmeal right after it bakes, mix the glaze together and drizzle on hot slices of the baked oatmeal.

If you are planning to make this ahead of time (go you!), then make sure to reheat the slices (or warm the whole casserole) before serving. I like to compare Amish-style or Pennsylavian Dutch Style recipes to Southern comfort food. Amish or PA Dutch food is akin to the comfort-food dishes of the South, but for us Northerners! Amish-style baked oatmeal is a casserole-like breakfast dish. It is denser and a little more “cake” like than traditional baked oatmeal. This is definitely more of a comfort food.

Although I slightly adjust each baked oatmeal recipe to fit the particular flavor profile of the baked oatmeal combination, the base still remains dense and comforting.

While you can let baked oatmeal sit on the countertop, as a rule of thumb I suggest adding any baked oatmeal with fruit on it to your fridge.

Storing your baked oatmeal in the fridge will also help to extend the life of your baked oatmeal. After preparing your baked oatmeal, it will last stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 cup milk dairy or non-dairy milk will work

Glazed Apples

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • splash of lemon juice
  • pinch of salt

Glaze

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tbp milk dairy or non dairy milk will work
