What is Chocolate Dump Cake?

Dump cakes are magical time-saving recipes! There are basically 2 types of dump cake, 1) the kind that you dump all the ingredients into a single bowl and mix it together, or 2) the kind that you dump all the ingredients (typically butter and cake mix) into the baking dish and bake it right up. This recipe falls into the first category.

In this chocolate dump cake, you’ll want to add all the ingredients to a large bowl and mix the batter together at once. No fuss. No frills.

It’s almost as simple as making a box cake mix. And it will taste better too!

How To Make Cooked Peanut Butter Icing

If you have never made cooked icing before this might be a bit different than methods you have used before, however, it’s pretty easy and makes a pretty delicious icing!

The cooked icing is made by adding flour and milk to a saucepan. Boil the saucepan milk and flour together to make a roux. You’ll want to stir the mixture frequently to avoid lumps from forming.

Then, set aside the saucepan and let the contents cool.

To a large bowl, add the saucepan contents along with the rest of the icing ingredients. Next, you’ll want to use a hand mixer to beat the frosting at a high speed into fluffy peanut butter icing! You’ll notice the color change to a much lighter color when the frosting is fluffier.

Can I Double this Recipe for a 9×13 Pan?

Yes! This is a wonderful recipe to double for a 9×13!

My original family recipe was actually meant for a 9×13 pan, which is wonderful for a big event or holiday, but sometimes this amount of cake is just too much. So, I adjusted this recipe to fit into a smaller pan for smaller gatherings.

But if you need a larger cake, you can easily just double this recipe.

Can I Make this Cake Ahead of Time?

100%!

I suggest making this particular cake ahead of time. My mom and I have always agreed that this cake is better the next day. I am not really sure if it is that much butter the next day–or if it’s just the fact that the cake is already made.

Regardless, if you prepare the cake ahead of time, I suggest that you chill the cake slightly before you serve it. The chocolate dump cake is my favorite when it’s slightly chilled.

Do I Need To Add Coffee To the Cake?

Technically, no you can use hot water, but I highly suggest hot coffee.

WHY?

The coffee in the cake batter doesn’t give the cake a coffee-like taste. Really! If you are worried about the cake tasting like coffee, no need to worry! The coffee is added to the cake batter to enhance the chocolate flavor of the cake.

But coffee (especially strong coffee) when added to chocolate can really help intensify the flavor of chocolate in baked goods.
