How To Make Dutch Apple Crisp Pie

This apple crisp pie is a super easy and quick recipe! If you are looking for a pie to make for your upcoming holiday party or just as an after-dinner treat you can whip this fall dessert up in a flash!

Make the Crust & Crumble

One of the best parts of this recipe is that you’ll make the topping of the pie AND the crust both at the same time!

To make the mixture for the crust and crumble you’ll need flour, oats, brown sugar, melted butter, and a tiny bit of salt. Add all of the ingredients into a big bowl and stir, stir, stir until the mixture has fully combined. Then, using a 1-cup measuring cup, scoop out 1 cup of the mixture to reserve for the crumble topping.

Dump the rest of your crust mixture into your 9.5-inch pie dish and press it into the pie dish until it forms a crust.

At this point, you can add the crust into a preheated oven for up to 10 minutes to par-bake the crust before you add the filling. Baking the crust is optional, the longer that it bakes the harder your crust will become. If you are going to bake it first, I suggest no more than 10 minutes. If you want to go for a softer crust (more like a double-layer apple crisp) consider baking the crust for up to 5 minutes or not at all.

Prepare the Apple Filling

To get started on the apple filling, you’ll want to add a medium saucepan to your stovetop burner and turn the burner on to medium-low heat.

Add the tbsp of cornstarch to your water, and mix them to create a slurry. Then place your peeled and diced apples in the pan along with all of the other ingredients for the filling. Simmer the filling ingredients over the stove until the filling has thickened and the apples have softened a decent amount (about 8-10 minutes). Note the apples do not need to be completely fork tender at this stage, they are just about halfway there.

Build Your Dutch Apple Crisp Pie

Add the apple filling on top of the crust and then sprinkle the reserved crumble evenly on top of the applied pie filling.

Bake And Enjoy

Bake the apple pie to perfection. The pie will be lightly golden brown when you remove it.

The pie will be LAVA hot when it comes out of the oven. I suggest waiting at least 20-30 minutes before cutting into and attempting to serve the pie. Serve with a scoop of ice cream (I like the Sea Salt Caramel ice cream that Aldi makes) and a generous drizzle of caramel. Enjoy your pie!

The Ingredients

unsalted butter

I use unsalted butter to control the amount of salt that I add to this recipe. If you use salted butter, just adjust the salt quantities as needed.

flour

All-purpose flour is all you need for this recipe! I haven’t tested out other types of flour (although I imagine oat flour would work quite well). If you try out another type of flour, let me know how it goes in the comments below.

old-fashioned oats

Old-fashioned or rolled oats have the best look, texture, and outcome in this crumble. You can use quick-cook oats as well, but the texture might be a little off.

brown sugar

Is it even an apple crisp-inspired recipe without brown sugar?? Brown sugar adds the perfect slightly molasse flavor to the crust/crumble of the pie. It also helps to create a golden brown appearance!

cinnamon

I like to add cinnamon to the crust/crumble as well as the filling. You may opt to use apple pie spice instead or leave the cinnamon out altogether.

salt

Make sure to add salt to the apple filling and the crust/crumble. Many apple pie/crisp recipes leave the salt out of the apple filling but TRUST me, a little bit of salt enhances the flavor of the apples.

diced apples

Honey Crisp, Gala, Granny Smith, etc… Any baking apple or combination of apples will work perfectly in this recipe! Just make sure to peel your apples before starting the filling.

granulated sugar

Add granulated sugar to the filling to sweeten the apples.

lemon

A little bit of lemon along with a sprinkle of salt and your apple filling will be the BEST you’ve ever had! The acidity of the lemon helps to bring out even more apple flavor.

cornstarch

Add cornstarch to the water in the filling (before adding it to heat) to create a slurry that will help to thicken up the apple pie filling.

Best Apples To Use For Dutch Apple Crisp Pie

I typically use my favorite apples, the ones that are currently on sale, in this pie. 🙂

Any type of baking apple or combo of apples will work in this recipe like Honey Crisp, Gala, or Granny Smith apples.

How To Serve Dutch Apple Pie

You can serve this pie at any temperature you like (room temperature, cold, warm), but I really suggest serving this pie warm. Is there anything better than warm pie a la mode? I’ll wait.

We like to top our pie off with the sea salt caramel ice cream at Aldi, but vanilla is always great too! Drizzle on a little caramel dessert topping on top of everything and you’ve got a winner!

How To Store Leftover Apple Crisp Pie

I suggest storing your leftover pie covered in the refrigerator. It will last the longest, and taste the freshest when stored in the refrigerator.

To eat leftover slices, I suggest popping your slice in the microwave for a little warm-up prior to consuming (especially if you are going to add ice cream to the top)!

I LOVE baking in a glass pie dish! It’s got a great even bake and the glass looks gorgeous!

I have used my Pyrex glass pie dish (passed down from my mom) for so many pies and quiches throughout the years. While my dish is pretty old, and I can not find the exact same item, you can purchase a beautiful Pyrex glass dish that’s very similar on Amazon.

As a bonus, it’s safe for the microwave, dishwasher, and freezer. Just make sure to add your glass baking dish to a preheated oven.
