How To Make Garlic Naan

Yikes! Have you seen the prices on garlic naan bread at the store recently?! We LOVE naan bread, but when the prices went up to $5.99 for 4 pieces, I started to investigate how to make garlic naan at home. In this recipe I will show you how to make garlic naan bread easily — and MUCH more cost-effective than you see at the store! This is the softest, best garlic naan recipe you have ever tried. And it uses basic ingredients– no special flours or equipment here! In an hour and a half, you can throw together this recipe.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Garlic Naan Bread?

All-purpose flour: No need for any special flours here. Just use good ol’ all-purpose flour in this recipe!

Yeast: Active dry yeast will work perfectly in this dough. If you use a yeast packet, you will be able to use the packet twice (with a little leftover).

Sugar: Sugar helps to activate the yeast. You can use any sweetener you like here (besides a non-sugar sweetener like stevia). However, if you are low on granulated sugar honey or brown sugar will also work.

Minced Garlic: Adds the garlic flavor to the garlic naan. I made this easy on myself and used the minced garlic that you can buy in olive oil. Fresh garlic will work as well. Omit garlic if you want to make these plain.

Plain Greek Yogurt: Emphasis here on plain. Make sure not to use a flavored Greek yogurt. Yogurt keeps the bread light and fluffy. For the fluffiest naan, use whole-milk Greek yogurt. (You can use other Greek yogurt like low-fat or 2%–I often do. The naan will be a little less fluffy, but this recipe will still turn out great!)

Flaky Sea Salt: There is something special about flaky sea salt. It makes everything taste better. And I believe it elevates anything. We love the bites of salt that flaky salt adds, but you can always use regular salt.

Warm Milk: Milk keeps the bread tender and softer. Whole or 2% milk will have the best effects, but any milk will work.

How To Make Garlic Naan

You won’t believe how easy it is to make the best garlic naan EVER! And it’s so much cheaper than buying it at the store!

  • Add sugar and yeast to warm water. Let it set of 5-10 minutes or until it foams.
  • After the yeast has started to activate, add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix until combined. Dump the dough onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 10 minutes.
  • Add the dough to a greased bowl and cover with a damp towel. Keep the bowl near a warm surface. Let the dough rise for 1 hour or until doubled. Once the dough is risen, then punch it down.
  • Divide the dough into 9 pieces. Carefully roll or hand-stretch each piece out to 1/8-inch width naan on a floured surface. Add olive oil to a large pan on the stovetop and heat up the pan to medium heat. Place the naan in the pan and cook each side for about 2 minutes

What to Serve With Garlic Naan Bread

Naan bread is great on its own or toasted and slathered with a layer of your hummus of choice and veggies. Here are a few of our favorite ways to serve and eat naan.

  • Obviously–With Indian food! We just had the BEST mango curry at a friend’s house and we contributed the naan to the meal. Curry and fresh naan is a pair made in heaven.
  • For Fajitas! swap out your traditional tortillas of fluffy, tender naan bread. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop eating it!
  • For Pizzas! We use leftover naan as pizza crust all the time. Top the cooked naan with sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings and cook for 8-10 minutes at 375. WOW.
  • For Gyros! This is my all-time favorite way to eat naan bread! Naan makes the perfect flatbread for a gyro wrapper.
