How To Make an Oatmeal Bowl

Let’s be honest. Stovetop oatmeal gets some bad publicity. Most people see it as, well, boring.

But here’s the thing: I fully believe that stovetop oatmeal can be WAYYYY more interesting than we make it out to be. My solution to cure a case of boring oatmeal is to make a delicious & balanced oatmeal bowl. Similar to a smoothie bowl, an oatmeal bowl is loaded with LOTS of interesting toppings.

Below is my formula for the PERFECT oatmeal bowl that will be FAR from boring.

Add Some Crunch

First things first, oatmeal can be monotonous in its texture. A good oatmeal bowl, in my opinion, has some sort of a crunch. Be it granola, graham cracker pieces, chocolate chips, nuts, etc. Adding in some sort of crunchy element will do wonders in adding dimension to your oatmeal bowl.

In this case, we will be using chopped honey-roasted peanuts as our crunch element.

Add a Drizzle

The drizzle is my favorite element of a good oatmeal bowl. The drizzle in your oatmeal bowl should add a punch of flavor. Some drizzles to consider include almond or peanut butter, jam, honey, caramel sauce, etc.

In our honey-roasted peanut butter stovetop oatmeal, use a drizzle of honey.

Add a Fruit

Be it frozen, fresh, or dried, fruit can add visual and more flavor to your oatmeal bowl. In this recipe, we add in sliced banana for our fruit element. But, you could also sub in strawberries or raspberries for more of a peanut butter and jelly-inspired bowl.

A Little Salt Doesn’t Hurt

These days, it seems like flaky salt is the answer to enhance all of my food! But seriously, a sprinkle of flaky salt on top of your oatmeal might sound odd, but it will make a world of a difference in bringing out the flavors of your other toppings. I like to add a sprinkle of crushed flaky salt on top of my oatmeal.

Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Stovetop Oatmeal Ingredients

Oats: Obviously, this is the base of your peanut butter stovetop oatmeal. Use rolled or old-fashioned oats.

Milk of Your Choice: Any milk will work (although I have not tried this with canned coconut milk–let me know if you do). Soy, almond, oat, or regular milk all work wonderfully in this recipe.

Honey: Use honey as your natural sweetener in this recipe. I like to drizzle a little bit of honey on top of my bowl before eating as well. If you don’t love honey or don’t have any on hand you can substitute the honey for brown sugar or pure maple syrup.

Salt: Salt deepens and enhances the flavor of anything it is added to. Add a little bit of salt to your oatmeal to make your oatmeal WAY more flavorful.

Peanut Butter: Use creamy or crunchy peanut butter in this recipe, whichever you prefer.

Honey-Roasted Salted Peanuts: Add some crunch on top of your oatmeal with chopped honey-roasted salted peanuts on the top of your bowl.

Banana: Add sliced banana (1/2 of a banana per bowl) on top of your oatmeal bowl to make your bowl more dynamic!

What Kind Of Oats Should I Use

This recipe is meant to use rolled or old-fashioned oats.

Rolled oats are my favorite kind of oats since they are SO very versatile in the kitchen. If I have old-fashioned oats, then I know I can make just about anything: bread, breakfast, cookies, and a variety of baked goods. You can even make flour out of rolled oats by adding them to a blender and pulverizing them completely.
