Tru Fru Copycat Frozen Banana Bites Recipe

I keep on walking by Tru Fru in the freezer section. If you are unfamiliar with that brand, they make frozen fruit bites dipped in chocolate and sometimes a layer of yogurt or peanut butter. YUM, right? Their chocolate and peanut butter-covered banana bites never fail to catch my eye. Who doesn’t love a chocolate-covered banana?

The only problem is that the Tru Fru packages are pretty pricey ($6.48 for an 8 oz bag at my Walmart). But I LOVE saving money on groceries and this product always makes me think “I can do that.” This Tru Fru copycat frozen banana bite recipe is even better than the Tru Fru version and you make it with all the ingredients for half the cost and you get WAY more than 8oz (or 16 pieces out of it)!

It’s true, I sat down and did the math!

Here’s the cost breakdown, for all you curious minds:

  • Tru Fru
    • $6.48* for an 8 oz bag with roughly 16 pieces
    • or $0.41 per piece
  • My Homemade Banana Bites Recipe
    • $3.11* for 27 pieces (2 banana slices stacked using peanut butter)
    • or $0.11 per piece

*Costs are reflective of the costs in my area (Harrisburg, PA) during the time of writing this (Apr 2024)

How To Make This Tru Fru Copycat Banana Recipe

I kinda hesitated to call this a recipe. Not only is this banana bites recipe SO easy to throw, but we are basically slicing fruit, adding peanut butter, and dipping in chocolate. But after making these frozen banana bites a few times, I realized that it is all about the FREEZE time. Below, I will share my best tips to easily make these chocolate-covered banana bites faster, and with much less mess.

Follow the Steps Below for the Best Tru Fru Copycat Banana Bites!

  • To a sheet pan add a sheet of wax paper. Set aside for now.
  • Cut off the ends of the bananas. Slice each banana into about 16-18 slices. Add about 1/2 – 1 tsp of your favorite nut butter or cookie butter to a banana slice and add a banana slice on top to create a banana slice and nut butter sandwich. Place the finished banana bites on your wax paper-lined sheet pan.
  • Freeze the banana sandwiches for at least 1-2 hours. Make sure the banana bites are frozen before dipping them into chocolate, otherwise, they will fall apart in the chocolate and create a big mess. If you are struggling to remove the bananas from the wax paper, let the sheet pan sit out of the freezer for 4-5 minutes and try to loosen it again.
  • When your banana sandwiches are frozen, prepare the chocolate. Add the chocolate chips and olive oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate and olive oil in the microwave by placing the chocolate into the microwave for 30-second intervals and stirring in between until it is melted.
  • Working quickly add one banana bite at a time into the melted chocolate, flipping the banana around with a spoon to get it coated on all sides. Remove the chocolate-covered banana slices and place them back on the parchment paper.
  • If you would like to add any toppings like flaky salt, crushed nuts, or cookie pieces, then sprinkle them on as the banana bites are still setting.
  • Return the coated banana bites to the freezer and freeze for another 2-3 hours. After the bananas are set, eat them up, or place them in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 1 month!

Tru Fru Copycat Ingredients

Bananas: You’ll need 3 ripe, but not overripe bananas (see the picture above as a reference).

Nut Butter or Cookie Spread: Use whatever nut butter, seed butter, or cookie butter you have on hand! Check out some of our favorite combos below in the suggested fillings and toppings section! 🙂

Dark Chocolate Chips: Dark chocolate pairs so well with the sweetness of the banana. You can substitute the dark chocolate for any chocolate you prefer though.

Olive Oil or Coconut Oil: The oil helps with the dipping of the chocolate. A little oil makes the chocolate smoother which helps with the dipping!

Toppings: Add whatever toppings you like (or leave the banana bites as is), for example: crushed cookies, crushed nuts, flaky salt, peanut butter drizzle, etc

Suggested Frozen Banana Bites Toppings & Fillings!

If you look closely at the photos in this blog post, you will notice that I am using 3 different fillings and toppings for these banana bites! This recipe calls for 3 bananas, so I like to make each banana its own combination! The possibilities are truly endless, but I will share with you my 3 favorite banana bite combos:

  • Nutella + Flaky Salt
    • Nutella makes a great aesthetic filling in this banana bites recipe. When you use the Nutella filling, you will get a subtle hint of hazelnut, too! Since this combo is pretty sweet, we LOVE adding a sprinkle of flaky salt on top because 1) flaky salt enhances literally everything it touches + adds a gorgeous crunch 2) let’s be real–she’s a beaut!
  • Peanut Butter + Peanut Butter Drizzle
    • We love the double peanut butter action. Peanut butter in the middle and peanut butter on top! For the peanut butter drizzle, add a tablespoon of peanut butter to a microwave-safe dish and heat for 30 seconds, the peanut butter will be liquidy enough to drizzle.
  • Cookie Butter+ Crushed Biscoff Cookies
    • Cookie butter is one of my favorite things! I just happened to recently receive cookie butter and biscoff cookies, thanks Mom :). So of course, I had to add them to my favorite frozen treat! YUM!

Have another combo in mind! Try it out! There are so many different fillings like almond butter, tahini, sunflower seed butter, crunchy peanut butter, etc, that would make an excellent combo! Test out other toppings like sprinkles, crushed oreos, crushed nuts, white chocolate, etc well for more variations! Let me know what you try out in the comments below!
